romance is in the mail

Photographer Christa O'Brien created this editorial photo shoot around the idea of a Valentine's Day brunch, and here at Locust House, I never turn down an opportunity to create romance. With plant dyed silk ribbon, roses galore, and special touches like a hand calligraphed save the date; romance isn't in the air, it's in the mail.

Gem Valentine

One of my favorite bespoke elements from the photo shoot, which has been featured on Knots Villa Weddings, is this cocktail menu with Valentine cocktails and romantic fine art calligraphy by yours truly.

Modern Romance

One thing that I find very inspiring is the fine line between minimal and Marie Antoinette. If you have studied French history, or have been fortunate enough to tour Versailles in all its splendor, you'll know what I mean. Marie Antoinette came to Versailles as a teenager and was reknowned for her extravagant, vibrant taste. To me, there is something inspiring about walking the line between "just enough" and "over-the-top". A little bit of the unexpected fuels my creativity and keeps things fresh and interesting.

Romantic Calligraphy

Creating the pieces for this editorial was a lot of fun. It seems ridiculous to think that one would enjoy their career so much, but I really do. To get into the Valentine's Day spirit, I doubled-down on the theme and spent the time listening to Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, and Madeleine Peyroux, while happily calligraphing the day away. I'm a hopeless romantic, through-and-through.
